A Colorful Christmas

Mid of December, it is again this time of the year. Christmas preparations !

Red and green are the traditional colors for Christmas, neutrals if you want to give it a more rustic look. Me, this year, I go for color. Just let it sparkle and bring joy in the house.

Set the spirit of this year’s Christmas decoration right at the entrance door: color, handmade, traditional motifs, vintage, simple, modern, homey. You still have time to take out those left over wool yarns and make your own pompom Christmas wreath. Kids will love it, and your guest will admire your handwork. This year I organized some workshops where we did some embroidery based on traditional motifs, it is so relaxing to loose your mind while making something beautiful. Some felt, a needle and embroidery yarn is all you need to make such beautiful Christmas decorations for your tree.

Candles is a part of the Christmas period, I start every year making a small arrangement for the advent period, 4 candles and each Sunday you lit one candle more, till Christmas arrives. And than on Christmas eve you can have a table full of candles to celebrate that our Savior is born. Mix the size of the candles, you can also use different candle holders, the mix will make an interesting center piece on your table. And you see you don’t need more to make the table festive.

There can be a lot of reasons why you don’t have a Christmas tree in your home: no place, no time to go and buy one, you don’t want to cut a tree to have it just a few weeks in the house and throw it out. It doesn’t mean that without a tree you can’t bring in the Christmas atmosphere. I love a mix of vintage Christmas decorations, my parents have still some very old fashioned ones from the 50s. As a child it was such a joy each year to decorate the Christmas tree and look at all those amazing decorations. Combine styles, colors in a creative way.

Christmas is a time of being together with family and friends, a time to prepare together the Christmas dinner, a time to make memories. Gifts are a part of the celebration. Keep the wrapping simple , don’t buy expensive wrapping paper, but make it personal. I love to have all my gifts wrapped in the same color, style. Just important not to forget who gets which gift. A small name tag can solve that problem.

As dark interior is already something very spacial it can have some strong colors to make a bold impact. Combine colors and go for big size decoration if not it will look lost in the background. Big paper balls, a felt garland and colorful ribbons will make your home look as it is ready to be featured in a glossy magazine.

You can take some extra care to set the table for Christmas eve celebration. Flowers, a nice decoration with Christmas balls, and candles to create an unique center piece. Pay some extra attention on the napkin and make it special by adding a small touch: some green leaves, a small Christmas ball, all kept together with a ribbon. See what you have in the house, no need to buy something special. Green leaves or small branches you can get out of the garden, or make a walk in the park.

We all have our Christmas recipes: depending on the family tradition, cultural or local inspired. Give it a modern twist. This can be just by presenting the food or drink in a different way than you do each year.
