Decorator's Tip: Interior inspired by Fashion

Maybe it is my background in fashion that keeps me going back to fashion, to see what is trendy, as one is influencing the other. Or maybe it was because I prepared a homework for my students this week where they had to make a mood board starting from a fashion image and translate the spirit in to an interior.

The dark colors of the Alaïa outfit gives all you need for a sleek, sophisticated interior and it shows that this mono-colored look doesn’t have to be boring. Mat in contrast with shiny. The wall behind the woman could inspire me to use a mohair velvet, very interesting in combination with leather, a feminine - masculin contrast in materials. Leather not only for the armchair, but as well a good idea for wall or floor covering. Dark wood essences, bronze, tinted glass, and add a mirror to bring it all to life.

The tailored look of Alexander McQueen is asking for a clean look. In perfect balance, contrast between black and white and very light colored natural materials. Graphical, symmetrical, a perfect match in details and material combination. Simple shapes, classical approach but with amazing details when you start taking a closer look. Here it is all in the refinement for the trained eye. Pieces of furniture that make the minimalist style interesting.

The 60s are back with the collection of Marc Jacobs. Smooth lines, round shapes, voluminous fabrics. Perfect for a modern and minimalist approach with a touch of something extra. Here the red makes this interior stands out. Pure design, timeless and playful at the same time. Create your room with a certain grandeur.

This outfit of Prada combines an old-fashioned tailored look with a nostalgic feminine touch. How to bring that together in an interior? A masculin heavy tweed fabric for the upholstery of this armchair. This armchair gives me the impression that it wraps itself around you, same as the over-sized coat. This in contrast with the transparency of the chairs and cabinet. A cool look created by combining it with the vintage standing lamp, it brings in the nostalgia. And what do you think of the wallpaper, it seems as through a fine curtain you discover some flowers.

Back to the country side with Dior. Stripes, checks and hand painted furniture for a modern countryside look. It brings a positive vibe in these grey times that we are living. Naive and joyful, to bring you in a good mood. It also makes me think of school uniform, not sure why as mine was for sure not that fancy. A color harmony with which you can’t go wrong, this style will always bring back memories.

Timeless elegance gets a romantic touch at Valentino, all you need for a look in which you can’t go wrong. The right proportions, neutral colors, simple shapes. Take care as it can get quite boring if you don’t add something. Bring in a feminine touch with a painted cabinet, wall paper, a floral pillow. But keep it modern.

A colorful collection for this autumn by Issey Miyake. Simple shapes that are uniting people. Connection and interaction is all we need. Multifunctional furniture, stackable tables or poufs, DIY shelves and assemble your sitting area. A creative interior that sparkles. Could be a great inspiration for a junior / teenager room.
