Homage to Frida Kahlo

Autumn arrived, but this should not be a reason to give up on the colors of summer. Your interior can be colorful all year round, filled with energy and joy. Frida Kahlo is a great inspiration for colors and for adding an unexpected touch to create an eclectic room.

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon (1097-1954) , Mexican painter whose paintings have very strong autobiographical elements. She painted many portraits and self-portraits, a lot of her work was inspired by naïve folk art to explore questions of identity in Mexican society. She mixed realism with fantasy and she is most know for her paintings about her experience with chronic pain. At a very young age she came down with polio and at age 18 she suffered a terrible accident.

Frida Kahlo, a muse, a lover, victim and survivor. She is the model of a bohemian artist: unique and rebellious. She inspired feminists, fashion designers, artists and photographers. Her career and international recognition took of in 1938 when she had her first individual exhibition in Ney York. After meeting Andrée Breton she travelled to Paris where he organized an exhibition for her. This was in 1939, just before the war and the response was less than she expected. But the Louvre purchased the work The Frame and she was the first Mexican artist to be featured in the Louvre.

She was born in Mexico City and the Bleu House, La Casa Azul, where she spend most of her life, was made into a museum in 1958. Diego Rivera and Frida filled the house with colors, folk art and pre-Hispanic pieces. Most of the rooms looks exactly as in the time they lived there. Frida Kahlo has been a muse and she still inspires.

Let Frida Kahlo inspire you to use colors. Combine those strong colors to create a modern contemporary interior. No need to decorate your home all at once. An interior will anyway change over time as you will change too. Combine the things as you feel it is right, as it fits your personality. You are unique, so should be your interior as it is a reflection of who you are. Maybe you find some weird objects on a flea market. If you like it, why not. Remember: it is your home, you should like it not your family or friends.

Combine modern with vintage, Clean lines with hand made pieces.Geometrical motifs with floral elements or ornaments. Bring in an artistic vibe, spice up the kitchen. Specially now that we spend more time at home than ever before, or home should bring us joy, inspire us te be creative. Decorating the table with handcrafted plates adds personality, it brings a human touch, made by skilled artists and made with love. It makes a lot of difference, try it once. I have some small cups made by a friend, drinking coffee out of them is as I feel her hands in my hands.

Frida Kahlo was suffering a lot, but she also enjoyed life, having friends over and party. Get out your colorful cloths, dress up the table and celebrate life, celebrate the day that is given to you. Life is short and not all days are happy days, but seeing the positive side of a rainy day will bring some sunshine in your life. Think out of the box, use some empty bottles and cans to keep your flowers. Small things, out of the ordinary are the things that make life playful.

Mix up pieces, don’t look for the perfect match as it only will get boring. Some timeless furniture pieces as a base, than add artworks, a special armchair. Search for special accents as those will make your room look personalized, and this only you can do. And here you feel also that you can’t just go shopping to decorate your new home. It takes time, don’t rush.

Who told you the bathroom should be all white? Nobody, right? So get creative and add a wallpaper or some colorful tiles. Ok, bathrooms are one of the expensive rooms in the house and you don’t want to change them in 2 years, but a powder room can be out of the ordinary, make it look astonishing, You could pick some special wall lamps to give it a complete different vibe.

Frida Kahlo spend a lot of time in bed, this didn’t keep her from being creative. The bedroom should be a room to relax, but make it interesting, and decorate this room so you could also spend an evening there reading a book, having a corner to be creative. This is also a room where you could mix more things, nobody have to see your strange collection of objects, things you collect on your travels, books, textiles, art work.
