Decorator's Tip: Start with an Art Work

Finally you can start decorating your new home, or even just one room in the house. But than you feel overwhelmed and have no idea where or how to start. Choose an artwork that you really like. This can be a painting of a famous artist, a poster, a photograph, or something you just love. Maybe you want to hang it on your wall, but this is no must, it might just inspire you.

First you start to look at the colors of the art work, select the colors and you can make your color harmony, this will guide you through your projects. Accent colors will come in smaller amounts, the more neutral colors will take more space in the room.

Once you created your color harmony and feel that this reflect also your personality, than you are on the right way. Once the project will be finished you will feel immediately at home. Now you take another look on the art work and start looking for other images which reflect the same mood. Those images will help you for the next step in the project.

And now you are ready to realize your dream home. You will see that it helps you a lot to make decisions as you already know for which colors you will go. The mood board you’ve made will make it clear if you are looking for more minimalist of more classical pieces. Straight lines or more curved ones.

You will discover that it will be much easier with your color harmony to have a balance in the house. In one room one tone will be more important than the other, this will come natural, follow your instinct. And take your time to find each piece, believe me even for me after all those years of making interior design projects it can take quite some hours before I find all the perfect pieces together.

We are all different and we will all find the art work we love. Look good at the details. This botanical drawing looks very romantic and classical, right? But did you notice the tangerine flower? It brings life to the work, and makes the color harmony much more modern and interesting.

When I look at the flowers I can imagine myself in a castle with a big garden filled with spring flowers. Luxurious, young, pastel colors, embroidery, dinner parties and amazing chandeliers……. right? Ok, lets decorate.

Even in a small bathroom you can create a look for a princess. The free standing bathtub in this pink tone will set the tone of the room. Feminine, fragile, filled with beauty of an other century for the romantic at heart. Will be difficult to get out of the house in time in the morning, I can imagine you want to spend a lot of time there.

This romantic style is not always that easy when one of you is maybe more contemporary, but the bedroom is the room where you can add more feminine touches. This room gets a nice modern bohemian touch with the striped bedlinen and yes…. the tangerine classical armchair. Combine floral prints with stripes for a more interesting approach.

Dark and colorful. Does this mean every room should be painted in one of those dark or strong colors? No, combine it with white for a very modern interior. Could be even a good option for the kids’ room or even the nursery.

This print makes me think of mid-century Scandinavian design. Pottery, embroidery, playful, simple shapes. To create a room filled with joy and creativity. Now you feel already you are looking for some round pieces, color blocks, a touch of vintage.

Mix it all up against a white background. And if you love colors than it will never be to much. Combine big color surfaces such as the bookshelves here, or it could also be one wall painted in a strong color, with a more playful mix. Keep it graphical, make it bold.

The nursery comes often in pastel colors, or the typical pink / blue tones. A lot of white, strong colors in combination with natural wood will make this nursery the place not just for your baby, but it will be the room where he or she will play for the next years. The oversized floral print in combination with the stipes of the throw will give the room a vintage touch.
