Wallpaper stays high on the list when decorating a house. Murals are very trendy since a few seasons. So what is it all about when we talk about murals. What is the difference between a classical type of wallpaper and a mural.

The idea of a mural is not new. When I started to look for inspiration for this blog post the 70s came to my mind. But don’t worry, we are far from those hippie esthetics, or what do you think? Very colorful graphics on the wall in the 70’s, mostly it would simply be painted on their wall. We still see here the influence from the 60’s and Pop Art Round shapes and strong color combinations.

And than there were also walls covered with prints of nature; forest, beach, exotic destinations. Not sure if would suggest that to my clients. I could still see it in a center of well being, but even than I would try to convince them to something more stylish.

So what is the difference between wallpaper and a mural? Quite a time ago I wrote a blog post as introduction on wall coverings and later also about the hand painted wallpapers. A classical wallpaper will come on a roll, 52 cm wide and 10 m long. When coming from the States the roll will be wider but shorter. There are differences in quality of the paper and also in the printing technique. The design will have a repeat and you will be able to choose out of some color combinations.
A mural is covering the whole wall, there is no repeat and depending on the manufacturer can be customized. The paper is in general heavier than the classical wallpaper and it comes not on a roll but will be printed on panels of approximative 1m width and the length you need to go from floor till ceiling. Lately a lot of wallpaper editors launched a special collection of murals as the demand for this type of wall covering was on the rise. In those cases they come as standard panels and you can choose the amount of panels you need to cover your wall.
To get the wallpaper of your dreams there can different options, again depending on the supplier. It can be that they have standard dimensions and at the same time the option to have it printed on other dimensions, There will be for sure a price difference, but this type of wallpaper you don’t change every 5 years. It is as a work of art. It starts to get really interesting when you can customize your wallpaper, I had the chance in the past to work with manufacturers where I could even do a patchwork starting from different prints, they would combine them for me and print it as a normal mural. Or you can go for a mural and have simply the background printed to put on another wall. Changing colors can be more challenging but is possible.

The design options are endless. You can find traditional wallpaper designs in an oversized print, just a detail from a classical painting blown up for an amazing trendy look in a modern interior. Botanical prints, graphical designs, maps, ethnic inspired motifs and even nature photography for those who love the 70’s or want to have nature inside. Go for it and make your room outstanding with such an amazing wall covering.

For every room you can find options. Create an amazing wow effect in your entrance, the wall behind the sofa in the living room. Ever thought you can put wallpaper in your shower? Now it is possible, several companies developed a wallpaper that resist water. A bit more expensive than tiles but the effect is completely different. You need to follow clear the instructions and than you can enjoy your wallpaper for years.
