How Textiles Can Transform Your Home

Now that autumn is settling in quietly and the days are becoming shorter and cooler, it is time to take a closer look inside and see what we can do to bring more warmth inside our living spaces. Adding textiles is a perfect way to make your interior more cozy for the coming months.

Since I wrote a few weeks ago about a touch of folklore in the home, I have kept seeing those wall hanging popping up everywhere. They must be the item of the moment, so better keep looking for them. Old-fashioned, you say? No way. Take a look at how beautiful they transform the bedroom space. Adding still a baroque mirror on top of the wall hanging makes the entire arrangement look as if it’s ready to be featured in an interior magazine. They work perfectly as a backdrop for a small chest of drawers in the entrance or in a corner of the living room.

An embroidered runner or a printed tablecloth with a folklore inspiration will enhance so much warmth at the table. Perhaps you brought some back from your holidays; in that case, nice memories will surface each time you use them, it tells the story of different time and place. This kind of decoration brings a touch of countryside feeling to your interior, which is perfect for this season. You can create a rustic feeling by adding hand-carved wood accessories, recycled glassware, candles and a small bouquet of dried flowers.

If you subscribed to my newsletter, then you know already that in September, the V&A museum in London opened a new exhibition titled Marie Antoinette Style. Meanwhile, in Paris, Maison Pierre Frey contributes to the restoration of Queen Marie-Antoinette's interior chambers at Château de Versailles. The original document was created in 1784, it has 25 color shades, and was produced using woodblock printing technique. A true masterpiece of the Manufacture d'Oberkampf in terms of its richness, design and execution, it has been entirely redesigned and screen printed by hand. Choosing to have the same exquisite print for both your curtains and wallpaper will bring a subtle touch of luxury to any room. This is an excellent choice for a classical bedroom, as it will make you feel a queen.

Pillows are the most popular way to bring in a fresh new vibe into your home. They can be the perfect match for the season, easy to change at the beginning of each new season. You can add color, interesting texture or decorative motifs according to your personal style. I love the idea of some fine mattresses piled one on top of the other, they create a lovely cozy atmosphere. When selecting fabrics, think carefully about color harmony or pick a theme to successfully combine different textures and patterns. It gives a bohemian touch to your interior.

Make a beautiful garment the striking accent piece in the room. You can easily fix it on a pole and hang it against the wall. The visual impact can be just as powerful as that of a beautiful painting. It will draw all the attention as soon as someone enters the room, creating a wow effect. This could be an exquisite kimono, an embroidered folklore blouse, or even some cherished baby cloths that you’ve kept tucked away in a drawer. Is a pity to hide such pieces in your dressing room.

Art for the home doesn’t have to be limited to just prints or paintings. Arts and Crafts are back in vogue, with macrame standing out as one of the most popular trends at this moment. Perhaps you can connect with a local artist to create a large, unique wall hanging tailored to your space, or maybe this could be a rewarding project for you to take on during the long, dark winter months?
