Pierre Cardin bought the Bubble Palace, as his holiday home, in the 90’s of last century. The Bubble Palace was built between 1975 and 1989 by the Hungarian architect Antti Lovag for a French industrialist. The estate is build over 6 floors surrounded by a tropical garden and overlooking the Mediterranean. The architect, who didn’t like straight lines, was inspired by the prehistoric caves.

The round shapes we see outside of the Bubble Palace, continue inside, not 1 straight line. Inspired by the prehistoric caves, bringing protection and comfort. The Bubble Palace makes me think of an octopus outside and a shell inside.. The round shapes feel very natural and gives us a kind of balanced feeling. Making life softer is all we need these days.

Shells are an amazing inspiration, the colors, the structure and once we see a section of a shell we see how perfect nature is. No screaming colors, but colors that are soothing to the eye. More a play of shades than a play of colors. Small structures to the surface will also bring an interesting play of light/

Rounded sofas have been already in trend since a few seasons. They are perfect for an evening with friends, enjoying a calm moment with a glass of wine and some finger food. It is easy to see everybody around the coffee table, much more social than the straight sofas, or even worse, the sofa in L-shape where everybody seems to be focussed on the television. Draped fabrics will also soften and bring an elegant touch to garments, same a draped curtains in the room. Those rounded shapes in architecture will give the illusion that all lines are drawn by hand.

Soft lines and fine structures, undefined shapes, intriguing weaves. Is'n’t life more interesting when we see those structures, they can be perfectly imperfect. You see the hand of those who made them, in time and with passion. The objects seem to have a soul.

A mushroom can be round on top and super soft, with a touch of velvet, but once you turn it around you will see such a fine and delicate structure. As with the fireplace in an apartment designed by Lorena De Santos, beauty can be hidden and it will be the eye who is looking for this discrete beauty who will find joy every day seeing those subtle shapes.

Nature is playful, keep life playful without giving up on style. A composition of organic shapes, all combined as you feel to combine them. Nature won’t force rules on you, live from inside. Often my students are asking for rules: how many colors can I combine, how this or that? I always tell them that you combine colors with your intuition, I feel physically when colors don’t match.

When we see the wings of a butterfly, the eye of a fly than we see such a very fine network or lines. Very geometrical or more organic. The beauty we see in nature is in the small details, which we even don’t see always with the bare eye. They give an enormous inspiration for construction works.

Fishes in the ocean, the waves of the sea, smooth lines, going with the flow. It can’t be more relaxing than integrating this movement in your interior. Some soft music in the background, colors from nature and fluid lines for you to unwind after a long day in the office. Those lamps from Ochre seem to be made of water drops.

The earth is build out of layers; stone, quartz, minerals. To be discovered layer by layer. Every piece of marble will be different, it is made in time, beauty takes time. A bird’s nest has always intrigued me, build out of small branches to bring comfort to the small new-born birds.

So what can we do to make our home feel connected to nature

  • colors from nature

  • round shapes

  • fluid lines

  • play with small structures or weaves

  • natural materials

  • having the feeling that the objects are drawn by hand and made by hand

  • perfectly imperfect

We are part of nature, no wonder we feel good surrounded by organic shapes. Are you ready for a softer environment?
