The loft trend started in NY in the 80’s. The Meat District was an abandoned and dangerous area of the city. The artist were more than happy to find a big open space to rent. Later the loft became very trendy and prices went up. The loft and the industrial style still inspires a lot of people. And not only for big spaces. As much as possible open spaces, industrial type of doors with metal frame and glas. Concrete floor, cement tiles and a black kitchen with an industrial type of cooker would be the ideal.

Colorful, vibrant, modern; all ingredients to turn a small apartment in to a modern and trendy interior. You can take inspiration from the Pop Art artists. Keep the overall look very light; white walls, white or very light tones for most of the furniture and bring in splashes of color. Important in small spaces is to create the illusion of space: your furniture suspended or on fine legs will give you visually more space. And easier to clean.

Back to the open spaces where the artiste were living and working in. Surround yourself with art works, paintings, prints, sculpture and you will feel as living in an artist’ studio or art gallery. Inspiration all around you too create a very artistic interior. Mix it all up but take care not to add to much colors in big surfaces. Color touches will be or in the art works or in some small accessories. Dark wood will enhance the creative atmosphere.

Not only skyscrapers, you will find other parts in the city where you get a more village feeling. You see them in the movies, they make you dream to have such a place in the big city. The architecture of the houses will invite you to bring in a mix of furniture and create a cozy and relaxing bohemian interior. Combine modern and classical furniture against a background with modern art. Colors on the wall can be darker, in this case the furniture should be lighter to bring them to the foreground. Mix it up as you would go and find amazing pieces on the flea market or antiquaire.
