Trend Alert: Statement Ceiling

Statement ceiling are trending now, however it is not a new interior design element to enhance the living space. It has been around for centuries in various styles and cultures. A decorated ceiling with artistic or architectural details can immediately bring a sense of grandeur to any space.

We can see decorated ceilings evolving over the course of centuries and in various cultures around the world. In ancient times they used ceiling decorations to show, for example, religious beliefs. Mythological ceremonies would be painted on the ceiling of temples and tombs. It is the outstanding craftsmanship that produces those breathtaking ceilings; impressive carpentry, intricate carvings, lavish paintings.

The Romans invented the coffered ceilings, often adorned with intricate patterns. The Pantheon in Rome is a great example of engineering and design, featuring a stunning coffered dome. Pantheon is one of the highlights when visiting Rome, is magical to see the light entering through the ceiling.

During the Baroque and Rococo period the decorations became more extravagant in the palaces across Europe. Stucco, gilded moldings and stunning frescos. Louis XIV wanted to show his power in the world by building the palace of Versailles. In the Hall of Mirrors the ceiling is embellished with gilded stucco and paintings that reflect the extravagant style of Louis XIV, the king of France.

In cottage houses as well as elegant manors in the countryside we will find beautiful wooden ceilings and sturdy wooden beams. These architectural details can be in natural wood or painted in a neutral or bold color. Often they are decorated with traditional folklore motifs .

Construction beams are an architectural element we want or need to hide in one way or another. No better way to hide them as by repeating them in a repetition in the room and turn it into a decorative element. Adding some small elements can make it a real beauty..

The idea of the statement ceiling can be exciting design project. Here above you see the concept of a tent-like design, it creates a remarkable visual illusion that suggests the ceiling is not entirely straight. I love this idea specially for a kids room, it is charming and brings in a playful note. Combine white with a strong, vibrant color or pair two colors that fit the design of the room. To be sure not to make the room to busy: pair two tones.

Joâo Incerti was inspired by the family living in the house to create this ceiling decor. You see, even now, they continue to share stories that will survive the people living there.

Create a wow effect by adding wallpaper on the ceiling. It will give the room a unique and intimate feeling. Visually the ceiling will come down, creating a more cozy feeling. This is a design tool I use in dressing rooms to introduce a surprise element. This idea will also fit very well in a study, a darker wallpaper paired with wooden furniture can bring in a more masculin touch.

Don’t worry, you can give your room a complet new and refreshed look by simply painting the ceiling. Bring in a contrast color, or match it with an existing element you have in the room.
